This course provides an in depth overview of strategies, best practices and support for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Emphasis is placed on educating the child in the general education classroom. Content areas include an introduction of autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration, the use of functional behavior analysis and positive behavior support programs, strategies for improving pragmatic language and social language skills, family considerations, and development of curriculum modifications. Special attention will be paid to developing strategies for reading comprehension and the facilitation of the writing process. Students will be exposed to the latest medical and educational research as it pertains to the causes and best practices for children with autism spectrum disorders.
