Stuart J. Murphy, Author: MathStart series

This workshop will demonstrate how visual learning strategies can clarify mathematical concepts, and how children’s books can make math relevant to the lives of young children. Together, visual models and stories can motivate children and help them to communicate about math.
The award-winning author will use his own books, reference his experiences in classrooms across the country, and show examples of student work. Visual Learning will be defined and the skills and strategies associated with it will be discussed.
The primary objective of this workshop is to provide practical ideas for teaching math that can immediately be put to use. Participants will be asked to work in groups to create their own activities and visual models. Ample question and answer time will be allocated.

Grade Level: Prek-Grade 3
